BUT NOT WITH ….. !
I wish I knew how each and every one of you filled in the rest of this sentence! It wouldn’t surprise me if you all finished it the same way I do: “….but not with POLITICS!” There is a difference between Government and Politics, and these days it isn’t so subtle.
I probably should start this pontification with the definition of the two words:
Government – the governing body of a nation, state, or community.
Politics – The activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power.
As you can see, not only is there a difference in the two, there is a big difference!
Thanks to Facebook and other forms of Social Media, the average person can now jump into Politics with both feet – – especially the “debate” and “conflict” parts! As Christians, it is the “conflict” that we should be leery of, as we are told in Romans 12:18 “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” The bantering that takes place via Social Media today is a far cry from “peaceable!”
I recently heard that a popular TV Evangelist made the following statement: “If you vote for Joe Biden you are selling your soul to the Devil.” I truly hope this isn’t true, for such a statement sounds prett-tty judgmental to me, and we are told in Matthew to “Judge not, lest ye be judged.”
It is my opinion that the point that this nation really started going down the tubes is when our Governmental Officials went from being Public Servants to professional Politicians. Now, I realize that my opinion and a dollar will buy you a really cheap cup of coffee, but I do believe that it is something you may want to consider!
It is important that that we represent the truth, and that we vote for those individuals who share our Christian views. We probably should not, however, attack individuals because they disagree with us. When we do, that puts us in the same boat as the very ones we attack!
I suppose you are thinking, “Well, Floyder, is there any GOOD NEWS in this year’s election that we can take solace in?” And, fortunately, the answer is ABSOLUTELY!!!! And, not only that, the solace comes directly from the Word of God!
Proverbs 21:1 – The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.
Psalm 118:8-9 – 8 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes.
The thing of the thing is this – if you are expecting that who wins the election in November, regardless of who your candidate is, is going to be the key to your salvation and that of the nation you are already in trouble!!! I think the reason I sleep so well at night and feel zero anxiety over the current political climate is due to the two verses above, and an old time hymn that I have been singing for over sixty years, and very much claim as my life’s mantra:
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name
On Christ, the solid rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
Knowing that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), and that He was “Good for Paul and Silas,” I can say, with confidence, “And He’s good enough for me!”
