Are you old enough to remember the little chorus we use to sing about the Wise Man and the Foolish Man? You know, the one that goes:
Oh the Foolish Man built his house upon the sand
The Foolish Man built his house upon the sand
The Foolish Man built his house upon the sand
And the rains came tumbling down!
Oh the rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the sand went plop!
Now the Wise Man built his house upon the rock
The Wise Man built his house upon the rock
The Wise Man built his house upon the rock
And the rains came tumbling down
Oh the rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the rock stood firm!
So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ
Build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ
And the Blessings will come down!
Oh the Blessings come down
As your prayers go up
The Blessing come down
As your prayers go up
The Blessings come down
As your prayers go up
So build your life on the Lord!
The song, of course, was based on Matthew 7:24-27 (KJV): 24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
You may be wondering, “Well, what about the Dumb Man? Where does he come in?” The Dumb Man was not in the chorus. And, he was not in the Bible verses. In fact, I was only introduced to him a few years ago (5? 10? 15? 20? I know it was after 1980, but after that I am a little fuzzy!) Anyway, the Dumb Man was introduced to me via a human video that was presented at our church. And, the story of the Dumb Man is truly a sad one.
You see, the Dumb Man was originally a Wise Man! Yep, that ol’ boy built his house right on the rock! But, when he was finished, he went and spent all of his time with the Foolish Man. And you know what happened?
Oh the rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
The rains came down and the floods came up
And the house on the sand went plop!
The moral here is, I think, pretty apparent, but I’ll elaborate on it anyway. If we build our life on the Lord Jesus Christ, and then go spend all of our time with the world, we run the risk of having the floods of life overwhelm us. That’s why Hebrews 10:25 tells us, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
Jesus took it a step further by saying in Matthew 12:30a – He that is not with me is against me. Like the Prodigal Son, we are frittering away our Inheritance when we seek the pleasures of the world rather than the Kingdom of God! So, I guess I’m going to wrap this up by saying, “So build your life on the Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessings will come down.” That is, of course, as long as you don’t become like the Dumb Man!
