I have been around for nearly seven decades now, and sometimes I just sit and shake my head and ponder that age-old question: “What the smash is going on?” In the sixty years of my cognizant existence, the moral fiber of this nation has deteriorated at an exponential rate! Rather than just pondering this situation, I did a little research on it, and found some rather interesting information!
The best explanation is found in the tenants of The Durkheim Constant. Penned by Emile Durkheim, who lived from 1858 to 1917, and is considered by many to be the Father of Sociology, it reveals the following: “As Deviant Behavior in a Society intensifies, Society will redefine its standards downward to the point that what was formerly “bad’ behavior is now accepted and considered normal behavior.” Does that sound at all familiar to you?
There are others who have some judicious insight into this matter as well. For example, Sen. Patrick Moynihan added “Defining Deviancy Down:” “Aberrant Behavior is continually being redefined down until it is considered normal,” where he, basically, repeated what Durkheim had already shared.
Another thought along these lines was provided by Judge Robert Bork, who noted: “Once behavior is ‘Defined Down’ to become the ‘New Norm,’ those who continue to hold to the ‘old, non-diluted’ behavior, or the ‘traditional, moral values’ of the past, are turned upon and criticized for those ‘outdated’ beliefs.
As I continued to ponder on this information, I recalled some of my studies in history and realized that virtually every great society we know of was destroyed by the sequence described by the three individuals quoted herein, such as Greece, Rome, and France. This makes one wonder if we should just sigh deeply and accept what is going on around us.
GOD FORBID! As Christians we need to be like Joshua, who said: “Choose ye this day whom ye will serve, but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord!” And, if you are an adherent to the old axiom, “forewarned is forearmed,” you will find that the GOOD NEWS today is found in Is. 5:20 – Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
There are a number of individuals who currently “call evil good, and good evil.” However, we need not be dismayed, and we certainly should not conform to their lead, for we know that, because of their choices, “Woe unto them!”
