Double Whammy!

Friday The 13thToday is Friday the 13th.  It is, as you probably already know, the second Friday the 13th of 2018.  And (get ready for goose bumps!) it is exactly THIRTEEN weeks after the first Friday the 13, back in April!

So, Double Whammy!

Now, I am not a superstitious man, nor am I even a little “stitious.”  I have owned several black cats, and I am sure they must have crossed my path at least a couple of times.   I broke a mirror once, and did NOT suffer seven years of bad luck!  I never throw salt over either shoulder, and have been known to open an umbrella or two inside.  I don’t walk under ladders, but more to avoid having paint dripped on me than to avoid bad luck.  The only time I “knock on wood” is when I rap myself on the head. At one point in life I did carry a rabbit’s foot keychain, but it was blue, and, need I say more?

The question is, why are people superstitious?  There are, I suppose, several reasons.  Maybe, when it comes to superstitions, they are “agnostics,” and, not knowing for sure whether there is anything to them or not they choose to fail on what they consider the “safe” side.  Or, knowing that the world does contain “familiar spirits,” they believe that those spirits spend their time tormenting us mere mortals by fulfilling superstitions in our life.

Well, if you are, or sometimes waver towards, being superstitious, do I have Good News for you!  If there are “familiar spirits” who gleefully spend their days fulfilling superstitions on poor, unsuspecting folk, as Christians we have several verses we can trump them with.  For example, I John 4:4bFor greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. And, we certainly can’t forget Romans 8:38-3938 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Wow, what a powerful weapon those verses are!  And, what Good News that we always have them at our disposal!

Now, I have a question that I have been pondering for quite some time.  If one is frightened on Friday the 13th, should they be twice as frightened on Friday the 26th?
